Mom and I did our monthly 3 hour call earlier this week.
But Department of Education back at home, who the services answer to, made a decision that really screwed her and the kids over. Apparently, counselors can't provide psych therapy anymore, so she just got cut off from her kids effective immediately. As far as I understand, this decision kind of came out of nowhere and it might have been influenced by political lobbyists.
It's so upsetting for both her and the kids that had already bonded with her. She told me some of them were really upset and crying.
It's honestly a real bummer.
Very often, the kids she helps end up loving her. I think they feel her authentic desire to help them, on top of the fact that she's great at making people laugh. Mom really is one of the rare people in the field that prioritize the needs of the patients above her own.
Mom's passion has been to help people in need, so when I was like 14 she decided to delve into a career to support that. It really chokes me up to witness every uphill battle she's endured for the sake of noble intentions.
Obviously I'm worried about her on an individual level too. Though I take comfort in knowing we are superbly lucky to have trusted family that are willing to lend a hand, it's frustrating to see my mother unable to retire in peace.
Really wish we lived in a better world.
We're pretty bad at keeping in touch regularly because we both have that ADHD time blindness. But every time we do talk we talk for forever. In part it's to catch up, but also because we love to talk to each other.
Anyway, February was a rough month for her.
She's a mental health counselor and she's been working through a private company that connects her with special needs kids in certain school districts. But Department of Education back at home, who the services answer to, made a decision that really screwed her and the kids over.
